Desk Shell

Transfer insides of eMac to a new shell?

I have an eMac circa probably 2003, and the display has gone bad. The insides are all fine, but I have to have and external monitor hooked up to use it, I hate having both monitors on my desk, so I was wondering, is there anyway to take the insides of the eMac and put them into some kind of store bought pc shell?

  1. Meh. Unless you're a trained and certified technician, this is way over your head. Over mine, too. Looking at the specs, you're better off replacing the whole thing with a newer model, in terms of time and effort spent, and probability of success.
  2. With the eMac most of the parts are actually built around the CRT Monitor, I beleive the power supply is actually on the left side of the computer, so its probably better to see if you can get one with a defunct board or something and just put your good bits in it. -Daz
  3. Wow, unless you are a trained techie, this is something to stay away from. The CRT on an eMac has 20,000 volts on it even when it is unplugged and not turned on. You'd have to drain the voltage slowly to replace the CRT or you and the computer can get fried. 20,000 volts is enough to stop your heart and cause serious burns. Your best bet is to pull the hard drive and put it in another Mac. It'll work in another eMac or iMac. You could pick up an older Mac tower on eBay and put the old hard drive in with the new hard drive & have both. Or you could just pick up another eMac, they go for under $150 at www.lowendmac.com (check used Mac dealers) and swap the hard drives.
